Why Choose Galvanized Lag Bolts Over Standard Lag Bolts?

By:Gary Hall

Lag bolts are a fastener which is used to fasten two pieces of wood securely such as large posts and beams used for decking, railway trestles, wooden structures and wooden bridges. With the help of special insert called lag, it may be used in concrete. It has a large head (flat, oval, round or hex head) and cylindrical shaft. Galvanized bolts are available in various size and threads. It may vary in length; it may range from 1/4 inch up to 24 inches long and 1/4 to 3/4 inches when it comes to diameter. They are being manufactured using various material and the common types are zinc plated steel, silicone bronze steel, hot dipped galvanized steel and stainless steel. Zinc plated steel and hot dipped galvanized steel are more expensive because they provide resistance to corrosion and rust and capable of supporting heavier loads.

Galvanized lag bolts are very popular in outdoor use and marine and coastal environment because it is the best corrosion resistant type of bolt. Galvanizing a bolt provides protection from rust. The edge of galvanized lag bolts over other standard bolts is they can be used for internal or external applications. Galvanized bolts can stand rain, moisture, salt exposure and humidity.

How are galvanized bolts made? Bolts or screws undergo an electrochemical process which is named after Luigi Galvani, an Italian scientist. Galvanization is the electrode position process that add thin layer of zinc to the lag bolt and now they are using hot dip galvanization process. Galvanization is a process of coating an iron or steel with zinc to provide metal protection. Before the galvanization process, the steel must be washed and chemically treated to remove oxidation and dirt on the surface of steel. The steel will be dipped in molten zinc and drained off the excess zinc. The coated steel will be cooled either through cold water or cold air. The zinc acts as a mechanical barrier and sacrificial anode of the steel.

Manufacturers produce galvanized products including nuts, bolts, screws and nails. Galvanized lag bolts are use to prevent possible rust and corrosion of bolts that may cause dark stains on the wood structure or building facade. It will not only affect the appearance but it may also affect the quality of the galvanized bolts. Galvanized products gains popularity because of its product feature and this includes easy application, protects metal, provides support and strength, and extends the lifespan that will reduce repair and maintenance expense. The industry sector claims that galvanized lag bolts may last for over 100 years but of course if it expose to harsh condition it may reduce the lifespan. The galvanization process will slows downs the corrosion and it will not guarantee that it will never happen because special coatings erode and diminish through time due to the exposure to chemicals, abrasive, acid and salt.
